Introduction to Eastern Papermaking- Sun, May 17 - CANCELLED
This one day intensive (10:30 am-3pm with a 1 hr. lunch break) on Sun, May 17, we will guide students through the steps of processing kozo, mitsumata and gampi inner barks that are ready for cooking in soda ash, hand pounding into pulp, and pulling into sheets of paper. We will also give you a quick introduction to using seasonal plant fibers available in your backyard, such as iris leaves or tomato vines so that you gain a larger understanding of the difference between locally available fiber sources versus fibers sourced from Asia.
You will make a modified Eastern/Western hybrid style sugeta screen to use during the workshop and keep at the end of the day. The different varieties of pulp will yield strong, thin, translucent papers that are great for use in printmaking, bookmaking, or other art/craft applications. We'll air dry our papers on waterproof boards, and papers will be ready to pick up after a few days, or we can arrange for papers to be mailed to you. Be sure to bring a notebook to take notes as we review the history of Eastern papermaking techniques while watching videos.
Suitable for ages 16 and up, class size is limited to 6 students. Workshop fee is $85, and includes cost of materials.
