Papermaking from Invasive Weeds & Backyard Plants - Sat & Sun, April 27 + 28
In this 2 day class, from 2:30-5:30pm, we'll explore the process of making paper by hand from invasive weeds and backyard plants, making 4 different types of local plant papers. Using parts of the plants that would normally be composted and put in the trash, we'll focus on responsible harvesting. On the first day of class we'll go for a walk and harvest weeds along the way. We'll then process the plants for use in class the following day. On the second day we'll focus on making paper with the pulp prepared the previous day, using the basic techniques of Western style papermaking, and using some recycled paper fibers as an additional fiber for color/contrast. At the end of the class students will have the option of taking their damp papers home or leaving them at the studio to air dry in our restraint drying box, to be picked up the following week.
No previous papermaking experience required. Suitable for ages 16 and up, class size is limited to 6 students. Workshop fee is $85, and includes cost of materials.
